That’s why it’s called “pitching”

What a performance last night by Yovani Gallardo. Where would the Brewers be without him? Last nights complete game shut out was the first time a Brewer pitcher has gone the distance since April of 2009 when Yovani did it against the Houston Astros. As I watched the 24 year old pitch last night, it got me wondering if this guy has the stuff to be a Cy Young award winner someday. He certainly has the pitches in his arsenal to continue dominance year in and year out. His strikeout totals at the end of the season are always there unfortunely the offense has never produced enough runs to get him the wins he deserves. It will also be awfully difficult to compete for the award with the likes of Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay. This raises another question. Do you think that Yovani Gallardo will surpass Ben Sheets as the all-time Brewers strikeout leader? Ben Sheets ended his run with the Brewers with a total of 1086 “K’s” and currently Yovani has 398 in his career. Also will Mr. Gallardo ever break Ben Sheets single season stirkeout record of 264 accomplished in 2004? Gallardo’s best year was 204 in 2009. In my opinion Gallardo will surpass Sheets in both catagories.

On a related note, let’s give it up for Chris Capuano. His return to the big leagues started today. The Brewers called him back to the majors after having two “tommy john” surgeries to his pitching arm. It’s hard enough to come back after one, let alone two. Congratulations to him on having another go around, another chance to pitch, another chance at doing the thing he loves to do. I hope he does well!

I agree with you Mike, I also think that Yovani will be one of the best in the Brewers organization, surpassing Ben Sheets with ease.

Cy Young? Well, there is a provision in his contract, but we’ll take it one year at a time.
